JADA Events provides a varied open day at Evonik

Around 50 chemical and pharmaceutical companies organised a discovery weekend at their sites in May with the theme “The Future Sounds Exciting”. Evonik Antwerp also opened its doors, enlisting the team of JADA events to offer the 4,000 visitors a wide range of activities.

With this open day, Evonik Antwerp wanted to show how the company contributes to solutions for climate change, sustainable materials for the circular economy and innovative applications. In addition, the aim was to enthuse young people about the chemical sector. JADA events was commissioned with a stimulating concept in which visitors could participate in around 50 activities, all related to Evonik’s activities.

For young and old

JADA opted for a very varied interpretation of the event. “We opted for a concept with numerous fun activities where young and old are really drawn into the story of chemistry. We looked for activities related to Evonik, chemistry and sustainability…. Everything was organised in close consultation with Evonik and the different departments of the company, because it was important that all components were covered.”

50 activities and workshops

In total, visitors could take part in around 50 activities and workshops, something for everyone. “Birdhouses could be crafted in rainbow colours, which were then hung from trees using an aerial platform. This was a nod to the many swallows that live on the premises. Children could also learn how to programme a robot, which then independently completed a course they had coded themselves. And for those who like speed, there was the Hoverkart Grand Prix.”

Introduction to laboratory and warehouse

Visitors were able to get up close and personal with the various parts of Evonik Antwerp. “In the company’s Central Lab, the functioning of the laboratory was explained and people could get to work making their own shampoo. The operation of the workshop and warehouse was also explained in detail. Of course, a company like Evonik also has its own fire service. They demonstrated how extinguishing is done and gave valuable tips for certain situations at home. The Safety Street was all about safety and there was also a first aid workshop.”

From plastic waste to key rings

It was a great day that managed to enthuse many young people and young adults about science. “Programmed in the main tent was The Great Science Show, which attracted a lot of interest. Nice detail: visitors were also urged to bring some pieces of plastic waste to the event. These were recycled on site into cool key rings, immediately also a nice memento of this fine day.”

Electric vans

Of course, the chemical company’s site is not an obvious event location. “The vastness of the site presented a challenge. Obviously, certain critical facilities were not accessible to the public. The event mainly took place at the front of the site. Nevertheless, visitors had the chance to explore the entire site, albeit with electric vans,” Jan de Wieuw concludes.
