Kilimanjaro, with its snow-capped peak majestically stretching over the African plains, is not just any mountain; it is a challenge to body, mind and soul. Together with a team of 12 adventurers under the guidance of our guide Benny, we embarked on this epic journey via the scenic Lemosho Route.
Day 1-2: The journey begins
After a long flight and a night in Moshi, we met our guides and the brave porters who would support us. Excitement hung in the air as we checked our equipment and prepared for the days ahead. The first steps through the rainforest gave a glimpse of the biodiversity that makes this region so unique. Sykes monkeys soared through the trees while birds let out their symphonies.
Day 3-4: The Shira Plateau and the power of acclimatisation
From the dense rainforest, we moved into the open plains of the Shira Plateau. The vastness and silence of this area were breathtaking. This is where the real challenge began: the thinning air tested our physical and mental resilience. ‘Pole pole pole’ (calm down) became our mantra as we slowly adjusted to the altitude.
Day 5: The stark beauty of the Lava Tower
The climb to Lava Tower, at 4530 metres, felt like a battle against nature. Each step felt heavier, but the view of the valley and surrounding peaks gave us new energy. Our bodies felt the altitude, but we knew this day was crucial to our success.
Day 6: The Great Barranco Wall
Braving the imposing Great Barranco Wall was a highlight in more ways than one. This steep climb tested our technique and determination. At the top, we were rewarded with breathtaking views of the Heim Glacier and the Kibo Massif.
Day 7: To Barafu Camp and the excitement of the final battle
Barafu, which means ‘ice’ in Kiswahili, lived up to its name. Here, on the windy slopes of Kilimanjaro, we prepared for the final climb. The temperature dropped sharply and tension rose as we went to bed early, knowing the big day was approaching.
Day 8: The ultimate challenge – Uhuru Peak
At midnight, our climb to the summit began. It was a heroic struggle. With every step, we had to push our mental and physical limits. The icy cold bit into our skin, but after hours of unyielding willpower, we reached Stella Point. The sun rose and painted the world in golden hues. One last effort took us to Uhuru Peak, at 5895 metres – the roof of Africa. Tears, joy and a sense of invincibility prevailed.
The descent and the reward
The descent was faster, but no less arduous. After a night at Mweka Camp, a hot shower felt like the greatest luxury. At the gate, we were welcomed with our certificates and a sense of immeasurable pride.
An unforgettable journey
This expedition to Kilimanjaro was a test of endurance, cooperation and personal strength. The memories of the icy peaks, the warm camaraderie and the incredible views will stay with us forever. It was more than a climb; it was a journey into our inner strength.
