Ecology is a common argument in choosing between carpet tiles or carpet on rolls. The truth is that the answer is not so straightforward. They like to go over some considerations you may have when choosing between carpet tiles or carpet on rolls.
Environmental friendliness
Carpet tiles are often seen as the better option here because carpet tiles can be reused. They are delivered by truck due to their high weight (>4.5 kg/m²), used for a few days and transported back to the warehouse, where the tiles are cleaned. After each event, there is also always some loss because tiles get damaged during set-up/breakdown or during transport. Not only does this incur unexpected costs, but it is also an expensive tile that is then thrown away. If it then involves bitumen-based carpet tiles, the tile will often be incinerated as high-calorific waste. And that is where the shoe pinches….
The graph above shows the results of a “Life-Cycle-Analysis” carried out between bitumen tiles and our exhibition carpet, Expostyle. In this analysis, we take into account all of the above, being transport, (cutting) loss, waste disposal, production, raw materials, …
From this graph, we may deduce the following:
1m² of bitumen tiles emits about 18 kg of CO₂ if it is used 1 time, only after using the same tile 50 times does this one tile emit as much CO₂ as 50m² of Expostyle that is used 1 time and then processed as waste.
Once 50% of the Expostyle is recycled, you can use this one m² of tile hundreds more times. Expostyle will always emit around 18 kg CO₂/m² less.
When less than 50% Expostyle ends up in landfill, CO₂ emissions will continue to decrease compared to bitumen carpet tiles as the square metres increase.
Important note
The Expoquadra, Effex and Concord carpet tiles from Cover Flooring / Sommer Needlepunch do not use a bitumen backing, but a white polyethylene backing that cannot leave black streaks on sensitive floors. Moreover, our tile weighs only 3 kg/m². More tiles can therefore be loaded onto a truck and the handling is also less stressful for the back. In addition, this tile is 100% polypropylene/polyethylene, which makes it recyclable.
On customer request, it is possible to print the owner’s name or logo on the back. They also offer convenient folding storage containers developed to protect the tiles during transport and storage.
