Travelling to an island is always a bit of an adventure
Malta, as a destination, undoubtedly falls into this category. A beautiful island that is an ideal year-round destination thanks to a temperate Mediterranean climate. Actually, Malta is more than one island. You would almost forget that it is basically the Maltese Archipelago with the islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino.
Over the centuries, the Maltese islands experienced many invasions, hence the rich and unique history of the archipelago. The mixture of these different cultures and traditions has shaped the Maltese language and culture, including the Megalithic temples that were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Once the haven for the Knights Hospitallers and a hideout for pirates, this archipelago is today a popular destination for culture, sports, relaxation, as well as … meetings.
Conventions Malta
Indeed, Malta is also a surprising MICE destination. For that reason, in 2015 ‘Conventions Malta’ was established, a division of the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) to promote the archipelago as a MICE destination. Consequently, Conventions Malta offers free impartial information and assistance to event organisers wishing to organise their next activity in Malta. Conventions Malta thus does not operate on a commercial basis.
The Maltese archipelago lies virtually in the middle of the Mediterranean, about 95 km south of Sicily. Malta is the largest of the three islands that make up the Maltese archipelago. Malta is also the cultural, commercial and administrative centre. Gozo is the second largest island and is more rural, characterised by fishing, tourism, crafts and agriculture. Comino, the smallest of the island trio, is especially popular for incentive activities.
Easy accessibility
Malta International Airport is easily accessible from more than 95 destinations via 37 commercial airlines, at an average flight time of three hours from most European destinations. A flight from Zaventem takes exactly three hours. From Dutch Schiphol some 20 minutes longer. There are daily flights from Zaventem (a total of 16 direct flights per week).
Excellent accommodation
There are a total of 132 hotels in Malta and Gozo, which vary in size. From hotels belonging to the big international chains, to boutique establishments. For instance, there are 15 five-star hotels, including 12 conference five-star hotels, offering some 7,210 beds. There are also 41 four-star hotels on the archipelago, accounting for another 14,832 beds.
Meeting infrastructure
Malta has five dedicated conference accommodations. We list them briefly:
- Hilton Conference Centre – St. Julians
- InterContinental Arena Conference Centre – St Julians
- Mediterranean Conference Centre – Valleta
- Malta Fairs & Convention Centre – Central Malta
- Oracle Conference Centre – North of Malta
These venues all have state-of-the-art technology and can accommodate around 2,000 to more than 5,000 participants. Besides, all five-star and some four-star hotels have in-house conference facilities and dedicated MICE teams.
Part of Europe
Malta is part of the European Union and is a Schengen country, so its currency is the Euro. In 2018, capital city Valletta will hold the title of ‘European Capital of Culture’. From 1 January 2017 to 30 June 2017, Malta holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

Renowned hospitality
Touched by various civilisations over the centuries, Malta today is a surprising destination for conferences, events and incentives that guarantees a warm welcome thanks to renowned Maltese hospitality. Moreover, English is one of Malta’s official languages, alongside Maltese, making communication considerably easier.
